The Person of the Holy Spirit

Last night at Hope Baptist we saturated our minds and hearts with the truth of the person of the Holy Spirit. What a wonderful time in the Lord together!

During this study we examined many verses in scripture; too many to capture in our notes during the study. I have attempted to capture a list of those verses below. 

The Holy Spirit possesses attributes of a person:

  1. Intellect: Romans 8:27
  2. Emotion: Ephesians 4:30
  3. Volition: Acts 13:2


The Holy Spirit can be responded to:

  1. Obeyed: Acts 10:19-21
  2. Resisted: Acts 7:51
  3. Lied to: Acts 5:3
  4. Insulted: Hebrews 10:29
  5. Grieved: Ephesians 4:30
  6. Blasphemed: Mark 3:28


The Holy Spirit demonstrates the actions of a person:

  1. Speaks: Acts 8:2
  2. Teaches: John 14:26
  3. Distributed spiritual gifts: 1 Corinthians 12:11
  4. Convicts the world of sin: John 16:8
  5. Searches: 1 Corinthians 2:10
  6. Testifies: John 15:26
  7. Guides and directs: 16:6-7


The Holy Spirit is God (Divine Titles):

  1. Spirit of Truth: 1 John 5:6
  2. Spirit of Life: Romans 8:2
  3. Living Water: John 7:38-39
  4. Spirit of Glory: 1 Peter 4:14
  5. Holy Spirit: Matthew 1:8

The work of the Holy Spirit:

  1. Creation: Psalm 104:30
  2. Inspiration of Scripture: 2 Peter 1:20-21
  3. Bears witness of Christ: John 15:26, John 16:13-14

The involvement of the Holy Spirit in salvation:

  1. Conviction of sin: John 16:7-8
  2. Acknowledgement of Christ as Lord: 1 Corinthians 12:3
  3. Regeneration: Titus 3:5-6
  4. Indwells the believer: Romans 8:9
  5. Baptism of the Holy Spirit: 1 Corinthians 12:13
  6. Sealing of the Holy Spirit: Ephesians 1:13-14, 2 Corinthians 6:16
  7. Sanctification: 1 Peter 1:2

Baptism of the Holy Spirit:

  1. Happens at the time of conversion: Ephesians 4:4-6
  2. Places the believer into the Body of Christ: 1 Corithians 12:13
  3. Involves receiving the Holy Spirit as a seal and a promise: Ephesians  1:13-14

Filling of the Holy Spirit:

  1. Involves the confession of sin and the saturation of oneself with the Word of God. 
  2. Commanded (present tense) to be filled with the Spirit: Ephesians 5:17-19
