Pastoring: A Call To Service By Example
Read the following from 1 Peter 5: 2-4
Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly;
nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;
and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
Pastoring a church is a very specific call.
-It is a call to watch, spiritually and physically, over those who God entrusts to your care.
-It is a sacrificial call, but one which we give into willingly, not from guilt, fear, or necessity; but in eager excitement.
-It is a humble service of example and servanthood, not control and domination.
-It is a call and work which we will give an account to the LORD, as every flock is His.
It is amazing to me how simple this call is, but how it is often corrupted and polluted with pride. Why is that? Why do we pollute everything that is pure? Why are we so often committed to doing things our way?
I am convinced that my way is the wrong way. I am convinced that I really don’t know what is going to happen next and as a result I cannot plan effectively for the future apart from Christ. I am convinced that when left to myself and my own plans I will find only frustration and failure…
But here is the great news: as a disciple of Christ, I am assured that He will work out all things for good according to His will. So if the goal of my life is to glorify God, proclaim Christ, and to commit my life to His will and purpose then I am guaranteed success. Too many times I have been witness to God turning incredible pain and failure into blessing and success to doubt Him. Jesus is sovereign, He has been given all authority in heaven and earth, His strength is unlimited, He never grows weary, He is never confused, He is never tricked, He is never unprepared, He never fails… In Christ, I have have peace and victory forever.
Are you tired, struggling, or at the end of what you know to do? Cry out to the LORD, call out to Jesus and ask Him to save you and to be the boss of your life… And watch what happens when the King takes control!
